What Is a Pump Cover, and How Should It Fit?

•

A pump cover is an oversized shirt or hoodie you wear over your training gear at the start of a session, then take off once you are warm and working. It should fit loose through the chest and body, with a dropped, relaxed look, and enough room to layer over a tank or fitted tee without restricting your lifts.

What Is a Pump Cover For?

Lifters wear pump covers for three practical reasons:

  • Warmth during warm ups. An extra loose layer holds heat while you work through your first sets, which matters most in cold gyms and early morning sessions.
  • Comfort and focus. A roomy layer lets you train without thinking about how you look until you are ready.
  • Style. The oversized look works in the gym and outside it, which is why many lifters wear one all day.

The name comes from bodybuilding: you stay covered until the pump arrives, then the layer comes off.

How Should a Pump Cover Fit?

A pump cover should look intentionally oversized, not like a regular tee in the wrong size. Look for:

  • A loose chest and body that drapes rather than clings.
  • Dropped or relaxed shoulders so overhead pressing and pulling feel unrestricted.
  • Enough length to stay put when you bend, hinge or set up under the bar.

Most Lift Heavy Die Fit pump covers, including the Comfort Is The Enemy Phoenix, Death's Head Moth and Discipline Is Everything Samurai, are cut oversized, so you get that drape in your normal size. The Discipline Is Everything V2 is the exception: it has a regular athletic fit for lifters who want a cleaner silhouette.

What Size Pump Cover Should I Get?

Start with your normal size. Because our pump covers are already cut oversized, your usual size gives you the loose, relaxed look. Size up if you want an even baggier drape, or if you plan to wear a hoodie underneath in winter.

Pump covers fit differently from our regular tees, so check the pump cover size chart on each product page before you order. For regular fit tees, use the LHDF sizing chart.

What Do You Wear Under a Pump Cover?

Most lifters wear a fitted tank, stringer or regular tee underneath. When the working sets start and you are warm, the pump cover comes off and goes on the bench or over your bag.

Heavyweight or Lightweight Pump Cover?

Heavier cotton holds its shape and drapes better, which is why it is the classic choice. Our Sacred Savage pump cover uses 6.8 oz heavyweight cotton. In hot weather, a medium weight oversized tee gives you the same look without overheating. For more on fabric weight, read Heavyweight vs Regular Gym Tees.

Quick Answers

  • Is a pump cover just an oversized shirt? Essentially, yes, but a good one is cut to be oversized, so it drapes properly instead of looking like the wrong size.
